Isle of Skye Wigwam Glamping

While researching accommodations on Skye, I stumbled upon something more unique than a hotel. The Portree Wigwams!

What is a Wigwam?

The wigwams are wooden cabins built in a field with a shower/toilet and kitchenette inside, along with couch and a bed! Staying in a hut like this is known as Glamping (Glamour Camping) and I have always wanted to give it a go!

Price Details

The cost of a wigwam for 2 people is 80 Euros per night! This includes a bed, a couch/bed hybrid, a kitted-out kitchenette (with tea, coffee and fresh milk!), a dining table, a bathroom with shower and toilet.

Included on the property you have picnic tables to eat outside when it is nice weather, but the best inclusion is the stunning views you wake up to!

Pro’s of Wigwam Accommodation

The Portree Wigwams were in the perfect location, just a couple of minutes drive outside of Portree, which is the main town on the Isle of Skye and surrounded by beautiful scenery on all sides.

What we enjoyed about having our wigwam was being able to prepare breakfast and lunch in the mornings within our cabin, and come home after a long day of hiking to a cosy space where we could enjoy a warm shower, a meal and maybe a glass or two of wine.

Having the wigwam definitely helped us save money on eating out and gave us the freedom to be on our own schedule! We also enjoyed how quiet and dark it was at night – as we were hoping to spot the Aurora Borealis (too cloudy, unfortunately!).

Con’s of Wigwam Accommodation

The mattress was very thick, so it really is more like camping than an actual bed mattress. We used the cushions from the couch/fold down bed underneath our regular bed mattress for extra comfort; sleep comfort wasn’t an issue for us in the end.

Another con for me was that whilst the shower had plenty of warm water, the water pressure was not strong enough to wash my hair very well! This was no problem for my Hunk who loves roughing it more than I do. However I must say, having running water at all felt very advanced for the kind of set up we were in and I was appreciative to be able to actually have a shower after a long day in the bitter cold!

We Loved the Wigwam

Given that we had chosen to glamp in the wilderness instead of staying in a hotel – I can’t fault the experience! We really loved the wigwam, the quietness of the area, and the warm welcome we received from the owner upon our arrival.

All in all I would definitely stay in a wigwam again and now knowing any pitfalls – I will come prepared! Have you Glamped?

    1. Hi Thomas – currently 80 Euros is sitting around 88 in British pounds. However, as it is ever changing I recommend checking on XE.com for conversions! Cheers 🙂
