Copenhagen Is Cold In Winter, But It’s Still A Gem

My friend Canuck decided she would host her birthday in Copenhagen….IN FEBRUARY!

In February, it is Winter here in Europe… and Copenhagen is not known for warm warm at the best of times. So, I was expecting it to be chilly.

What we got was pure freezing temperatures – so cold it was difficult to stay outside for too long!

But, that didn’t get in the way of making our Copenhagen trip one hell of a good time!

Getting there

Flights from London to Copenhagen are extremely cheap. You can get there for £20! I purchased my flights late and spent around £90, which is not too bad considering it was a trip to a different country!

Copenhagen Highlights

Copenhagen is a gorgeous place. It reminded me a lot of Amsterdam with the architecture and the vibe of the place.

Copenhagen has a palace and is home to Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark – an Australian girl! This was exciting for our group, as most of us are Australians… and some of us even saw her leaving the Palace!

As it was Canuck’s birthday weekend, there may have been a ‘booze bike’ involved. A booze bike is when about 5-10 people sit in a circle and pedal, and there is a bike attendant who steers and generally entertains the ‘party crew’. Our booze bike attendant was hilarious and I recommend finding him if you are ever in Copenhagen!

Nyhavn is my favourite place in Copenhagen! The colourful façades of the building are just stunning. It is a waterfront canal and cafes and yummy food stalls all the way along. I can imagine in the summer it’s great to sit outside under a sun umbrella sipping on a cocktail!

The main highlight was going to Christiana. Christiana is a town {commune} amongst Copenhagen with its own laws. It’s an absolutely bizarre place and you are not allowed to take any photographs whilst ‘inside’.

image

The houses are built from what appear to be off-cuts of wood and tin, and the building for commerce {marijuana selling} are purely made from tin and army shields and netting used to camouflage in the dessert, etc.

image

In fact – it was actually built in a military area, the commune have essentially squatted here, and turned it into their own town with their own rules. BIZARRE!

I really enjoyed visiting Christiana, it was weird and wacky and certainly an experience to see! Go see it for yourself!

Copenhagen Nolight

The one thing that was truly a disappointment was seeing The Little Mermaid statue.

image

A Danish author wrote The Little Mermaid, so its no wonder they have a statue of her here, however, it’s very small and quite boring looking. No green fish tail and bright red hair here! It’s bronze and she sits on a rock, in a very boring part of town, the fishing harbour.

If it’s on your ‘must-see’ list, then go see her, but if you don’t care that much DO NOT GO! Spend your time doing something far more interesting!

A Danish Terorist Attack

So – the weekend we all went to Copenhagen, was the same weekend as the Copenhagen terrorist attack!

The attacks both times happened within 2 blocks of where we were, however the first one happened while we were all taking an afternoon nap {we totally cannot hang} and then the other attack happened when we were obliviously drunk in a Copenhagen bar.

You would not have been able to tell for the most part that an attack had happened as the Danish people didn’t let it affect their daily lives!

Best part of the weekend?

Going away with 10 of your best mates!

  1. It was absolutely not freezing temperature, I worry about all of you coming to Canada. But it was a bit chilly. This was my best birthday ever!
