Romania: Driving the Transfagarasan

Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear says the Transfagarasan is the best road to drive in the world, so while in Romania – we gave it a go!

First of all you must be told: the Transfagarasan is long (71 miles/114 kilometers) but boy is it beautiful! The Transfagarasan road is a road that passes through the CarpathianĀ mountains, to cut the driving route and time which can also be done by driving all the way around the mountain range.

You drive past a gigantic stunning lake, Vidraru Lake, curve around hair-pin bends, and feel like an ant as you pass some of the highest peaks in Romania – it is truly magnificent!

And the best part is in the valley – which is the most often photographed point. Unfortunately this part of the road was closed due to snow when we went over Easter. Whilst the rest of the country had no snow, assuredly up in the mountains, they had so much snow the roads were covered!

Taken from Google Images – this shows the piece of road I really wanted to drive, which was covered in snow during our trip!

But – was the Transfagarasan epic? Undoubtedly YES!

The Hunk had a great time pushing the pedal to the metal and I heard this quote far too many times.

Don’t be gentle, it’s a rental!

I was unable to drive due to a hand injury, so I was in charge of documenting the journey and making sure we had snacks and I was happy with this task because the road looked quite hairy at times!

A few favourite parts were:

  1. The Vidraru Dam. It is SO BLOODY HIGH I almost got a nosebleed when I was looking down.
  2. Winding bends. This was by far the most fun as we occasionally felt the car take a moment soaring through the air instead of driving on the road. Thrill at it’s best!
  3. The final 10 minutes of snow covered road. The road had been cleared for the width of one car to drive on the 2 way road, so we were hoping for some luck that no other car would be coming towards us. The finish was pure beauty.
  4. The Fagarasan Mountain views. Boy oh boy are these mountains beautiful! Being able to drive through them is a constant pinch me moment!

Love to drive? Or just love Top Gear?! Then accomplishing the Transfagarasan drive needs to be on your bucket list!
