Getting to Salzburg

Salzburg is easy to get to. My friend Canuck and I spent 2 days in Salzburg after our time in Vienna, so we took a train from Vienna to Salzburg. This was roughly 2.5 hours on a lovely comfortable wifi-enabled train, so there were no complaints from either of us about the time it took to get to from Vienna!11205487_10103009611416539_1263140426184542688_n

Where to stay in Salzburg

We stayed at the YOHO Youth Hostel! This hostel is perfect for the town of Salzburg. The hostel is much larger than you think it will be. It’s right by the mountain and new side of Salzburg and only 5 minutes walk from the train station.

Where to eat in Salzburg

So, Canuck & I ate pretty much everything, all the time, in Salzburg. It seemed like never was there a moment when we weren’t hungry. I put this down to the walking.. and how delicious the food is.

We ate at a gourmet burger joint on the main pedestrian street in new Salzburg, Linzer Gasse, called BioBurgerMeister. OH.YES. YESSS!

Our final night we ate at Zum Fidelen Affen and the meals are VERY Austrian and absolutely delicious! My dinner meal was Affen Steak, which was Grilled pork saddle steak on rosti-potatoes, gratinated with tomatoes, zucchini and cheese with smoked ham and a salad garnish – YUM.

The one thing you really must try, is the pretzels at the most famous pretzel stand, near Residenzplatz.. the pretzel we had tasted like a cinnamon doughnut! Yum-o!

Eating at the Augustiner Brewery is also a great option as they have Austrian food only and it’s not very pricey, so you get a yummy meal and drink beer and be jolly. Which brings me onto..

Where to drink in Salzburg

Go to Augustiner! Canuck & I rolled up to have a stein and an Austrian meal. Instead, what happened was we got completely wasted and forgot to eat…until we were completely wasted. Therefore I do not remember what I ate.10460293_10103009108120149_7755281062844607003_n

Now, drinking at Augustiner is a Salzburg institution. You will find that as a traveler, you may be the only ones. Everyone there is a local, and thus, as a tourist, everyone could tell immediately as we walked in!
The premise is simple, pick up a cream coloured stein mug, go to the register, pay for the beer, and then they pour it. Go find a table and HAVE FUN.

We made friends almost immediately, with a group of men taking us to have traditional liquor shots, and then we sat with them for the evening, drinking and laughing. That is until one of them propositioned my friend for a threesome with him and his wife… then it got a little awkward. “Just quietly back away….and SPRINT out the door!”

We then made NEW friends in the space of 2 seconds and did not leave until Augustiner was officially closed (and had been mopped down and all seats were turned over on the top of every other table..), We had the best time.

I even got to go behind the bar and pour beers!

Story Time

Our cab ride home from the bar we went to AFTER Augustiner was naturally a bit of a wild one. As we were blind drunk, we told our cab driver that we were a travelling comedy duo (which the cabbie believed), and that we had just finished our last Austrian gig in the Irish bar we just came out of!

We discussed everything from different crowd styles in different cities, to fame and how we try to stay humble. The cab driver was very impressed she had to celebrities in her car and seemed to believe we were comedians.. I’m going to put that down to us being bloody hilarious!

Hoffbrunn Fortress

The Fortress is the belle of the city. And actually, what I really mean is, the view of the mountains from the fortress is the belle of the city. I could have stayed there gazing at those mountains all day. How often in London can I gaze at the Alps? Never.

Apart from the view of the amazing Alps, the Fortress holds some pretty interesting exhibits, allowing you to go inside different stately rooms and see the artillery, and there is even a creepy puppet shop – which is actually a must visit!

Mozart/Sound of Music

If you did not know, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart grew up in Salzburg. He is their most famous thing. You can get Mozart chocolate balls, which are actually pretty gross 🙁 because they have marzipan in them. If you like marzipan however, you will probably LOOOOVE the Mozart balls!

While in Salzburg, you have the opportunity to see Mozarts home and museum which are in the old town near the Fortress.

Another famous ‘thing’ from Salzburg is The Sound of Music! It is o famous that the Yoho Hostel plays that movie EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, just so the backpackers travelling through town don’t leave without having seen this movie once.

TSoM was filmed in and around Salzburg, which you can tell when you are there as it feels very much Julie Andrews-esque. And you can visit where the children sang Do-Re-Mi, in the Mirrabelle Gardens!

Salzburg Impressions

I absolutely adored Salzburg and I hope I will get to go back and spend more time exploring. This was my kind of place. It was bursting with personality and felt very unique, with far too many things to fill my time there with than I could manage!
